A battery is a small autonomous source of electrical energy generated by a chemical reaction between the active elements in the sealed casing of the battery. Batteries are an extremely convenient and abundant source of electricity in the household.
Batteries can be of many different types depending on their composition and functioning. Generally they are divided into accumulator (rechargeable) and primary (non-rechargeable). Accumulator batteries have a major advantage over primary batteries – they can be used many times after they have been charged using a suitable battery charger.
Depending on their structure and composition batteries can be divided into several major sub-types.

Nickel-metal hydride batteries. Their abbreviation is NMH or NiMH. They are among the most popular and commonly used batteries because they are practical – they have large capacity and they are small and compact. Unlike nickel - cadmium batteries, nickel - metal hydride batteries have a high level of self-discharge but are susceptible to low temperatures and temperature fluctuations.

Lithium-ion batteries(LiIon) are far more durable and compact than NiMH batteries, but are much more expensive. They are most used in mobile communications and in digital devices such as cameras, mobile phones or even watches. They optimally combine long durability and reliability with less weight and volume.
