Western Digital Corporation is a company in the United States, specializing in the production, development and distribution of computer hard drives and data storage devices.
History
Western Digital was founded in 1970 in the United States by Alvin Phillips, who worked for Motorola and created the MOS metal-oxide transistor. Initially, they focused mainly on developing transistors, integrated circuits and chips for calculators. After the oil crisis at the time, one of the largest calculator companies went bankrupt. Thus, Western Digital also declared bankruptcy in 1976.
Bankruptcy and rise
In 1977, Chuck Miser joined Western Digital, initially as a donor and then as a shareholder. The company focused on the production of semiconductors.
In 1989, Western Digital developed the first data storage device and joined IBM. With the development of technology and computers, Western Digital managed to establish itself as a pioneer in the industry. Later, they used the profits and developed the first VGA video card, CD-ROM drives.
Today, Western Digital is a world leader in computer peripherals, and in particular in data storage devices. ATA and SATA technology, SSD drives, USB controllers for external computer hard drives.
