Crystal oscillators

The principle of operation of quartz generators is based on the inverse piezo effect. Each quartz generator comprises of a quartz plate cut appropriately by a quartz crystal (SiO₂), two electrodes and a holder. Upon submission of an AC voltage between the electrodes of a resonator, mechanical oscillations arise in it, and they are proportional to the intensity of the applied electric field. Various types of oscillations occur in the plate and they depend on the plate’s shape. As a result of the plate’s oscillations at certain intervals, consistent resonance may also occur, wherein the oscillation amplitude achieves its maximum value, and the electrical resistance between the two electrodes is minimal.
