A diode is a semiconductor electronic element that conducts an electric current in a p-n transition in one direction from positive to negative charged particles. A rectifier diode is a diode-type electronic element that serves to rectify alternating current AC into direct DC. Rectifier diodes operate at mains frequencies and "cut" one half-wave of a sine wave. They can be made of silicon or germanium, with silicon having higher breakdown voltages in the 1000V to 1600V range, while germanium ones having lower breakdown voltages of 100V ~ 400V. With silicon, the voltage increases with temperature, while with germanium, they have a voltage drop in the right direction and at the same current, they have less power.
